RUSSELL WALLACE QEKIYEKSUT loves many and is loved by many

i am honoured to be Given Permission to create an Echo Acoustic Portrait of Russell Wallace, Awarded Stat’liamX Composer Producer, Traditional Lil’wat Singer and inDigiPop Musician, with excerpts from 20 tracks produced over 40 years. Is it ElectroAcoustic or EcoAcoustic ? Is it an Audio or Radio Portrait ? Hears to our Brother Bear Brave Soft Sensitive Emotional Fierce Determined Knowledgeable Be Yond’ Funny Elder.

When VIVO (Video IN Video OUT) acquired Four of his Videos in 2014, Wallace wrote “With impulse we choose to initiate a process, with intent we find a direction and with context we create another layer that offers a different perspective. Am I conscious of these as they happen? Not all the time so surprises and epiphanies can happen when you least expect it.”*

Initiating research to compose an Audio Portrait of Russell Wallace, I found intention to include the compositions and contextual discoveries, to be Housed in eBoXes Bent with HTMLs #HyperTeXtMusicLimageSound. an eBook Bent with 12 Chapters: a very serious yet satirical book with prat falls, contrapuntal paralympics, hypothetical humour prompting listener reader viewer participant to venture into spaces of Coast Salish Territory Canada and beyond, where absurd symphonies of soundscape, human voice and bird song, may be heard when and where least expected flying past us into the present. Nonsense, you might say or Theatre of the Absurd that makes sum sense, sort of ? Purple Prose ?

‘Is there a text in this classroom?’ by Stanley Fish, Post Structural and HTML theorists, opened perceptual doorways to propose documents do not exist unless the reader or ’screener’ participates by literally moving through the books or boXes of #HyperTextMusicLimageSound. I hope you enJoy the eBoxes Bent with HTMLs and Labours of Love.

i was very moved when John Brady McDonald from Treaty 6 Saskatchewan, with thanks for me music, mailed a postcard for his Book of Poetry, KITOTAM (2021). I carried it with me till it was papiér machè in the Rain Forest. While studying at Cambridge University 2000, John McDonald symbolically 'discovered' and claimed England for the First Nations of the Americas. The Flag is on display in the First Peoples Hall in the Canadian Museum of History. Ottawa. Kitotam was nominated for the Fifth Annual Indigenous Awards 2022. BROTHER BEAR & BENT BOXES

RUSSELL WALLACE, Stat’liamx Composer Lil’wat Singer inDigiPop Musician, has composed and produced an impressive array of music. Vocalist, Round Drummer, Guitarist, Pianist, Composer, Teacher, Elder, Uncle, Grandfather Rocker, Funny and Punny, QEKIYEKSIT has shared his Gifts with Many with Reverberations Being Heard for ‘‘Miles and Miles and Miles and Miles*1. If Maestro Fresh Wes is godfather of Canadian Hip Hop is RUSSELL WALLACE QEKIYEKSUT a Great Uncle of Indigenous Pop & Choir ?

Russell Wallace was born in Tacoma Washington, the son of Stat’liamx Flora Wallace originally from Xax'lip and Ray Wallace of Lil’wat, Mount Curry Reserve. Bear Clan from his mother’s family, Wolf Clan from his Father, Qekiyuksut’s Ancestry includes Squamish Swedish Chinese Welsh. Family matriarch and lead singer, Flora Wallace sang with Russell, Ron (Pumakus), Joyce and Ridley collectively known as ‘Tzo'kam / Chickadees / Visitors are Coming’. Performing over 50 years for Aboriginal and Educational Communities teaching sharing stories keeping traditions alive. Expanding to share culture and preserve songs Flora carried since childhood, Tzo’kam performed opening for Buffy Sainte-Marie and Keith Secola at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival 1997, recorded for the Smithsonium Institute 2000, and recorded at Little Mountain Sound 2004, winning a Grammy for Aboriginal Recording.

Russell Wallace in Music Indigeneity & Digital Media writes “I am a composer, producer. My responses reveal my own personal experiences with musical media throughout my career and my views on pertinent issues of Indigenous musical transmission, production, composition as well broader political concerns. Maximilian Forte argues that indigeneity 'is a deeply current issue, which, over the past decade, has relentlessly forced itself onto social, political, and academic agendas across the planet' (Forte 2010b: 35). McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series 2012 publication Aboriginal Music in Contemporary: Echoes and Exchanges, by Editors Anna Hoefnagels and Beverley Diamond “narrates a story of resistance and renewal, struggle and success, as indigenous musicians in Canada negotiate who they are and who they want to be … and demonstrates how music is a powerful tool for articulating the social challenges faced by Aboriginal communities and an effective way to affirm indigenous strength and pride.

In Chapter 12, Intercultural Collaboration, Russell Wallace writes about “some of the collaborative projects in which I have participated as a composer and producer of contemporary electronic music and as a traditional Lil’wat singer. I encourage readers to consider what “intercultural collaboration” is, and might be, in terms of sharing music, ideas, and meanings cross-culturally. “Hey, wanna play?” was all it took on the playgrounds growing up. Most of the time, it worked, and each party played games enthusiastically. Upon growing up, games and play turned into collaborations, co-productions, and many other interactions described by words that have more than one syllable”. Series: McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series

Alex Varty in Georgia Straight writes “Among the pioneering artists whose heritage the band will explore are Kaw-Muscogee saxophonist Jim Pepper and Salish jazz singer Mildred Bailey, but Wallace will also contribute songs in St’át’imcets, some from his late mother’s repertoire and some composed by himself. Russell Wallace says “Since I’m not fluent in the language, I try to use whatever little language I do know and incorporate that into the songs,” he says. “I mean, even things as simple as counting to five. I wrote a Salish counting song, and so it’s what I know, but also I’m thinking of giving access to this language to other people. Our language has been labelled as one of the languages that will go extinct in the next 50 years, so it’s really kind of now or never.”

Russell Wallace has been performing and composing soundtracks with colleagues for dance, theatre, film, television including Director Loretta Todd’s Monkey Beach (2021) and Forgotten Warrior (1997); Producer Barbara Todd Hager’s 1491: The Untold Story of the Americas Before Columbus, a series that explores 15,000 years of history in the Americas from an Indigenous perspective commissioned by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) (2019, Leo Award ); Against the current : a collaborative cross-cultural performance is a celebration of the role of salmon in the Salish, Japanese Canadian and the founding communities of the Downtown Eastside (2015); Spider Woman Theatre Production of Red Mother (2012); Bloodlines with Rosa John and Warren Arcand with Video Direction by Dana Claxton (1991) and Red Paper (1996) “asserting a voice of power and interpretation recounting the devastating consequences of colonialism”; as Indigenous Artist in Residence at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (2019) and releasing an album with songs in Stát’imcets, UNCEDED TONGUES (2021).

In the composition, QEKIYEKSUT (2021) tells the story of his father and why he was given the name, which Russell and his son Ridley carry forward. Before moving to Tacoma Washington and Vancouver in Mount Pleasant, Ray Wallace was a hunter and trapper wandering the woods to provide food for his family. Russell wandered the country and the world to work, so he could feed and provide for his growing family. Ridley cycles Downtown Vancouver wandering as a bike courier. As Russell Wallace says, “We wander because we love and we wander because we are loved”.

Russell Wallace’s exploration of Traditional Songs with Pop Jazz Classical, was inspired in part by Sheila Chandra and Indi-Pop Monsoon. Russell Wallace writes”Sheila Chandra is an amazing vocal artist. The mix of classical Indian instruments and electronics and E-Bow guitar really inspired me. I could see the possibilities of singing in another language and using modern instruments.” Laurie Anderson, Joy Collective’s Love will Tear us apart’, Lulu’s ‘To Sir with Love’. Of ‘Ever So Lonely’ with Vocals by Sheila Chandra, Russell says, “I love this song to this day. I was so blown away when I heard this in 1982”. Jim Pepper and Mildred Bailey bring us to 2022, as Qekiyeksut plays inDigiJazz in Whistler, Canada.

William Haynes, born late in the 1890’s would tell me of Salmon in a Creek running through Mount Pleasant, of Horses pulling Milk Carts down Main Street, of Oakridge being a Pig Farm. Russell Wallace and I grew up on the same side of town in Mount Pleasant, near Queen Elizabeth Park. I remember Grade 3, I spoke up when a teacher spoke very condescending to a First Nation Boy. Feeling her wrath while pointing to the Back of the Class she yelled “Go SiT with Your Boyfriend”. She was the Spitting image of Nurse Cratchet, from ‘Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, a figure ready and willing to erase strength and spirit of youth, intending to rip the ‘Indian out of the Child’* and ‘Humanitarian out of the Girl’.

Like far too many indigenous children, forcefully stolen away from their parents, Flora was placed in Kamloops Residential School. In 2021 there were 215 Bodies of Children discovered there, with more being found in Mass Graves across Canada. Run by the Roman Catholic Church, Children were indoctrinated through song and text into the Colonial Dominion Format. Subjected to starvation, physical and sexual abuse, there are 80,000 Survivors. One can only imagine the trauma experienced by the Children, Families and Community. Although Both parents were fluent in St'át'imc language, out of love for his children Russell’s father Roy did not teach his children the language because of what he experienced in residential school.

During the Potlatch Ban singing and dancing were illegal, with Lil'wat almost losing language and traditional songs. Russell Wallace learned some of the language and songs by singing with his mother Flora, Family and Elders. Visions of keeping alive and sharing songs led to the group Tz’okam important to Flora, forced to not share them freely in residential school. Qekiyeksut writes “Being beaten and humiliated for singing and sharing our songs was a common occurrence. My mom pushed me to learn which was for me a big challenge, but over the years I understood what it meant to share knowledge and encourage other people to sing, who might not sing for whatever reasons they might have. Collaborating on a choral composition with composer/choral director Hussein Janmohamed for a Peace Conference back in 2004, when the Dali Lama was in town with many members of the international peace community. A youth choir sang the composition and my mom was there to witness it. I know my parents were always proud of me but that moment was something that I will always remember because we were finally able to share our language and music with the world in a good way. teach, share and maintain a tradition that has been kept alive by dedicated elders."

Composer in residence for the Chinook Winds Aboriginal Dance program from 1996-2003 at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Commissions include: the formation of Nunavut Gala in 1999, the Vancouver Peace Conference in 2004 which hosted the Dalai Lama and other international dignitaries, and various chamber ensembles and choirs. He has produced CD’s that have been nominated for awards at the Juno’s, Canadia

Russell Wallace lives with Catoplexy, similar to Epilepsy. When one becomes overwhelmed, stressed with fear or excitement one will fall fainting and pass out. Listening and teaching himself songs with Colour Coded K’tel Records and Reading Scf-Fi, as he says “often depicting First Contact”, Russell Wallace is well founded in encounters with pop culture, literature, art, and technology. Education has encompassed numerous disciplines including performing arts, information technology, creative writing, and ethnomusicology.

RW Qekiyeksut is musician, composer and faculty at Vancouver Community College, Banff School for the Arts, Native Educational College and Simon Fraser University, sharing his vast knowledge and love of music and song. A founding members of the Aboriginal Writers Collective West Coast, Alumnus of the UBC Creative Writing program, a guest programmer for Word Vancouver and Artistic Director for the Aboriginal Electronic Music Festival. If Maestro Fresh Wes is godfather of Canadian Hip-Hop, is RUSSELL WALLACE QEKIYEKSUT Great Uncle of Indigenous Electronica? yO !

Tzo’kam means “chickadee” and “visitors are coming” in the Stl’atl’imx language. Flora Wallace and her family have sung together at family occasions and community events for more than 50 years. After elder Flora Wallace participated in the Aboriginal Women’s Voices gathering (1997) at Banff, Alberta, the family decided to expand their efforts to share the culture. It did not take long for Tzo’kam to hit the stage and start recording. The first major concert by Tzo’kam was at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in the summer of 1997 opening a stage that featured Buffy Saint Marie and Keith Secola.

Tzo’kam recorded for the Smithsonian Institution, for Silverwave Records and released three CD’s on their own. Since 1997 Tzo’kam has performed at many festivals and concerts including Folklife in Washington D.C., Full Circle Concert in Calgary, Alberta, Harrison Arts Festival in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, B.C., and many conferences and gatherings.

Tzo’kam, under the direction of Russell Wallace, continues to work within the Aboriginal communities and educational communities to teach, share and maintain a tradition that has been kept alive by dedicated elders.

The singing group Tzo’kam, whose name means “chickadee” and “visitors are coming” in the Stl’atl’imx language, will also perform. After elder Flora Wallace participated in the Aboriginal Women’s Voices gathering in Banff in 1997, the family decided to expand their efforts to share their culture and has been singing together at public events for more than 50 years. Tzo’kam’s first major concert was at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1997, opening a stage that featured Buffy Saint Marie and Keith Secola. With three CDs under their name, Tzo’kam has recorded for the Smithsonian Institution and Silverwave Records; under the direction of Russell Wallace, Tzo’kam continues to work within Aboriginal communities and educational settings.

Russell Wallace is an award-winning composer, producer and traditional singer from the Lil’wat Nation. His music can be heard on soundtracks for film, television and theatre/dance productions across Canada and the U.S. Wallace is one of the founding members of the Aboriginal Writers Collective West Coast and is an alumnus of the UBC Creative Writing program. Wallace has written poetry, short fiction, theatre, and music theatre. Wallace was the artist in residence at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2019, a guest programmer for Word Vancouver and was the artistic director for the Aboriginal Electronic Music Festival for a number of years.

Sylvia Frances Sarah (me Mum) remembered feeding Carrots to Clydesdale Horse, who’d pull the Wagons with Milk Thick and Creamy from the Dairy. 8 years old, her Father George MacCormack died of Polysystic Kidneys. My Grandmother, Stella MacCormack, went to work for and later married Captain Harney. Still a child, Sylvia was sent away to live with her Grandparents, Franchesca and Harry. Tho she loved them dearly, remembering the way, she walked across Dublin to be with her Mom. Stella insisted Sylvia Stay ! She would hear her Mom Cry in the Night. Sylvia was sent to Boarding School, but was able to be home on the weekend. 5’2 as an adult, she would recall being scared to play lacrosse with Bigger Girls from the Country.

With Cease Wyss illustrating, Khalt-siya Barbara Wyss wrote Squamish People of the Sunset Coast relaying the history and cultural traditions of the Squamish people through the lens of two specific stories, ‘The Two Sisters’ and ‘Mink and His Brother’.

Loretta Todd’s IM4 Media Lab (an Indigenous XR Lab dedicated to Indigenizing VR/AR/360) and Turtle Journeys have honed Wyss’ skill at immersive world-building technology to teach people about scientific and Indigenous history and uses of Wild Berry, Vaccinium. Dr T’Uy’t’Tanat Cease Wyss is now a Hologam in the Dome VIFF 2022.

Transits and Returns, Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada and Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane Australia (2019–2020) presented the work of 21 Indigenous artists with practices rooted in specificities of their cultures and travels. Wyss's contribution was a 2018 work titled Shḵwen̓ Wéw̓ shḵem Nexw7iy̓ay̓ulh (To Explore, To Travel by Canoe), with sculptural materials used by makers from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Hawaiian Territories.

In fellowship with 221A Art Space, Wyss produced (accessed online, cameras recording 24 hours a day) X̱AW̓S SHEW̓ÁY̓ NEW GROWTH «新生林», 221A SEMI-PUBLIC 半公開 (2019–2020), Site-Specific work transforming an empty lot (271 Union Street, Vancouver) into a Pacific Northwest Coast rainforest garden containing flora of local biodiversity found across the traditional and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Spill: Response (2019) Curated by Guadalupe Martinez was a live research performance component of the exhibition titled Spill at the Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia. Spill: Response brought together artists, performance artists, and educators, including T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss, Anne Riley, Nelly César and Maria Thereza Alves to present their research through a series of workshops hosted by the gallery.

A Constellation of Remediation (2017–2019) was a collaborative two-year, site-specific public art project situated on vacant and untended lots throughout Vancouver, to build connections and shift consciousness and awareness of bioremediation, land-stewardship, and reconciliation. Wyss and Anne Riley planted indigenous gardens on specific sites based on decolonization work near locations through the Native Education College, Urban Native Youth Association, Wild Salmon Caravan Residency and Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty. The process involved communication with Public, Developers and Parks and Recreation Staff from the City of Vancouver.

#callresponse (2016) exhibition addressed five projects commissioned by Indigenous artists based across Canada and the United States. Participating artists were selected for their diverse work in engaging with community through practices ranging from performance to ceremony to new media. Co-organized by Tarah Hogue, Maria Hupfield and Taniac Willard, in addition to Wyss artists included Ursula Johnson, Laakkuluk Wiiliamson Bathory, Tanya Tagaq, Charlene Aleck.

Talking Poles (2009) public art installation commemorated a community dialogue project led by Wyss, Lorna Boschman and Victoria Moulder. Two poles standing 4.2 meters high were installed on both sides of Serpentine Greenway path in Surrey, a collaborative effort depicting words written in the many languages spoken by the community and allude to the role of the talking stick in Indigenous oral traditions.

Journey to Kaho'Olawe by Wyss documents the recovery and remediation of sacred land on the Hawaiian island of Kaho’olawe which had previously been occupied by American forces. Histories of migration are explored, by detailing the migratory journey of the Kanaka family to the Pacific Northwest Coast, as well as Indigenous Hawaiian and Squamish Communities.

Buffy studied Eastern Philosophy & Education, Founding Cradle Board Teaching Project ~ http://www.cradleboard.org .  I wonder if Saint-Marie’s ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee’ has any relation to ‘Bury My Heart in the Mountain’ from the song ‘Bella Ciao’. When I was at the VFMF 1997, being concerned that I may have appropriated a First Nation song, I asked me friend Archer Pechawis about Coastal Chants with "Heya Heya Hey Heya Heya Hey". Archer said, “don’t ask us young ones. We’ll all tell you a different answer. Go ask an Elder.” When I walked outside the festival gates and sat on the grass, Buffy Sainte-Marie sat on a Rock right beside me. I conveyed what Archer said. When I came to the part about elder she laughed with her long black hair and said “Heya is a Prayer and Part of Being Human”. Buffy asked me where my parents were from. I said Ireland. Buffy said, “Beautiful Land, Beautiful People. Were you ever there ?” i replied "when i was 2". When I sing Coastal Chants I often tell that story, adding with humour, and then Buffy would say “well, get back there”. Did Bluffy’s cousin Columbus sail La Santa Maria ? Juno Award Winning Metis Artist referred to my song as ‘a so called chant'. Lateral Violence, among Musicians or Cousins at least Discourages, at worse Devastates. Better make it Clear, I’m No Wanna Be. It is a Celtic Chant, influenced by Indigenous Chant that I’ve heard through out my life, being born hear in Coast Salish Territory on Turtle Island (North America). ‘Fire water earth air, I will do my living to know that you’ll be there, for the world is sacred and everything within, heya heya hey heya heya hey” (Coastal Chants Cassette 1992).

ACOUSTIC ECHOES & AUDIO BOXES: BARRY TRUAX, Soundscape, The Lorax

When I was a child Mum would bring books, from the library including The Lorax, giving me my first awareness of environmental and ecological concerns. Describing the name of Brother Bear & Bent Boxes, Barry Truax remarked “I’ve often wondered what Bent Wood BoXes Sounds like ?” We are Matrix who are Lorax.

While studying with R Murray Schafer at SFU, Barry Truax wrote ‘Acoustic Ecology’* (one of my favourite books) and co-created with colleagues, including Hildegard Westerkamp, the ‘Village Soundscapes’, measuring and describing sounds appearing between Two Villages in England. Classical Composer, R Murray Schafer ( -2021) brought the word ‘SOUNDSCAPE’ into greater public perception, with awareness of healthy and unhealthy acoustic environs, giving birth to World Soundscape Project at SFU and World Forum for Acoustic Ecology. Hearing words and music in the field of electroacoustics and acoustic ecology / eco-acoustics at SFU, and Directed Studies with Barry Truax, led me to compose ‘Soundscape Composition as Context Based Creation*. (Truax, B). If Folk Rock was my first love, Soundscape is my second.  Soundscape Composition is the Folk Rock of Electroacoustic Music.

UTS’AM / WITNESS 1997-2007 was born when Talal Semkin Siyam Chief Bill Williams, Nancy Bleck Spakwuas Slulum (Eagle Woman), and John Clarke Xwexselkm (Mountain Goat) met in the Elaho. RoundHouse Community Centre facilitated concerted community efforts to save the Elaho / ‘Place of Transformation’ from logging in the Northern Territory of Squamish Nation. With the AudioBox in 8 Channel Surround Sound, I composed ‘WITNESS: Round Journey including Squamish ‘Journey’ and ‘Honour’ Songs with Soundscapes of the Elaho (crickets birds ravens water people logging trucks). UTS’AM WITNESS CD (2004) for John Clarke Xwexselkn was Produced by myself and Dr T’uy ‘t’Tanat Cease Wyss, including artists Buffy Sainte-Marie, Bruce Cockburn, Squamish Eagle Song Dancers, Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp , Veda Hille, Sandy Scofield.

Sound and Acoustic Echoes tells us where we are in Space & Time. When Acoustic Space around is Disturbed, we are Affected to our Core. Sound and Noise ! Are we in a Calm or Chaotic Environment ? Sounds never Lie. Are Sounds Pleasing or Disruptive ? Is the sound too loud requiring adaptive equipment to protect our hearing ? kind or harsh sounds and words convey what ? Are the words and sounds loving or trustworthy ? Is the silence deafening ? Is there no silence ? John Cage would say “there is no silence’ proving this observation with his composition or conceptual  sound art SILENCE  (4:33),* creating quite an uproar in the concert hall and beyond . if silence has no sound or is the absence of sound, is nõ sound heard in the recesses of the mind ? No sound in a play or film or music is telling, like the slow and certain movements of a Japanese Nõ Play. With Multiple Sclerosis, ‘I’ve got this Water Rushin’ through my Brain, and I’m Taking the Slow Train’ (198., on Coastal Chants Tape 1992). Nõ Train ? Alas, the Silent Spring of Rachel Carson is vastly more concerning than the concept of No Silence of John Cage. Spring will be Silent if No Birds Sing!

I remember feeling the electricity while composing with computers at SFU, and hearing my womb talking after Tubal Ligation 1998. I was afraid of getting pregnant ? Over the years, walking became increasingly difficult until I could not. Could the operation with scar tissue, have exacerbated onset of Multiple Sclerosis ? I’d heard removing Mercury Fillings could help with MS. Further damage to my body my teeth neck right arm occurred when mercury fillings were removed. Two weeks later, my right hand became numb and weak. Still now, i have memories of being right handed. i never had jaw pain or teeth problems, until my teeth were compromised. My dear Friend, almost lost her life in surgery to repair her Appendix, because the surgeon missed her hemophilia  on the medical charts. Now, Her heart is much more compromised pumping blood. Could we be more affected by medical procedures than we admit? Is Dentistry affecting Nerve Damage more prevalent than we know ? How many Babies become Disabled due to complications in Birth ? Could we prevent alot of problems that loss of air, forceps and medical mishaps cause ?

unNATURAL HISTORY & DISABILITY: Is there a human in this box, cage or stage ?

me mother Sylvia would often speak of herself and other Children riding Sarah the Elephant at the Dublin Zoo, eXpressing concern for Sarah carrying their weight as she grew older. Me Grandmother Stella sang Opera & Musicals at the Abbey & Gaiety Theatres in Dublin, Ireland. Mezzo Soprano. When I was young musician, I remember talk of being in a Manager's Stable of Artists. I was never going to be a Race Horse !

‘Music is Money’ (Adorno). Every year there is a new format to play schizophonic music. Celebrities Sell New Runners & Colognes. O. I think I get it. Maybe I should endorse a Skate Board Company. Think I’ll take a Bus Driver’s Holiday to Horseshoe Bay, originally known as Chax’ai, and Bowen Island 'Island of Deers'. i wish i could ride those 3 wheel MotorCycles on Upper Levels. a Trike would suit me just fine.

Speaking of wheels and deals, I was crossing the street when an old uncle, bald in off white convertable (red leather gold tires) casually floated through to drive half a block to West Inn. When he joined two Younger Men, I approached and said “please be careful driving. I already got hit once this week”. I must be stupid or naïve ? 2 Brothers looked at me, like their Aji / Grandma / Kookum. Nightime Sirens Blared, as a Young Man was Shot, and his Brother Wailed No No No. Gang Warfare in Vancouver outside my window.

Went out to Horseshoe Bay stopping by Lalli Love's It, where I bought a Marionette Puppet of an Elephant ! Man waiting for his Wife looked at my T-shirt from Spirit Gallery, Native Northwest Coast Art. He asked “are you Native?” I reply, “No. My parents are from Ireland. I was born here in Coast Salish Territory Canada” He says”that’s Just as Bad”. I ask “where are you from?” He says “Germany”.

Chapter 6  TÁQEMKT

RCMP AND THE OPERA SINGER: Do y’All uP in Canada Still Call People ‘Coloured’ ?

Young Detective Cambridge, from the Royal Colonial Mounted Police, asks "are you Really an Opera Singer ?”

"O, you've heard about that? me Grandmother sang Opera and Musical Theatre in the Abbey and Gaeity Theatre’s in Dublin, Ireland. Stella MacCormack was invited to go to Europe, but her Mother and Father were afraid of her getting lost to Sex Drugs, Rock and Roll ! i'm an Aspiring Opera Singer ! Am i Suspect ¿

“I am a Soundscape Composer (disguised as a Bag Lad(y), but I really work Undercover for the Police Horses and Gardeners. Rapper Under_Cover yO, but Don't tell No One ... " i wink. "The Flowers on my Power Wheel are early warning devices so cars won't hit me ! Bonus, they bring Joy to Folks so it makes me Happy !

"am i an Opera Singer MoDérNo ? yO ! While riding Horses (prefer_ably Connemara Ponies) your Darn Tootin' we are, tho we ain't no Dolly Parton, Lil NasX or Julio Iglesias ! We is more like Minnie Pearl & Buster Keaton, No? Folk Rock like Buffy Sainte-Marie, Mae Moore, Tracy Chapman, Hildegard Westercamp, Glenn Gould (his Electroaçoustic Work), Ferron ... West Coast Siwash Rock (faerie fiery fay fauX rock anoñ and oñ beyond genre

"Do you know Trigger? Willie Nelson ? Solid as Rock ! You'll find them ‘working on the railway' ... I was a Girl with Guitar in 90’s. Still eXpressing Hate, HarleyQ said at Prana's Memorial "I'm watching you"! They've already Threatened to Hurt Ruin and Do Me iN! Prickly as Holly Bushes and Mean as Trolls Dumping Tallow in the Salish Sea. Seriously, i'm trying to Compose me self in Peace. Watch me Compose if you Want! It's a Beloved Paralympic Process ! if you want to know more, maybe Talk to Nash aka Nash_Ville !

"btw, Wasps in the Community Garden are trying to make a Nest in the Wood Shed. I'm concerned as people often walk by with Children and Dogs. I've been stung all ready. I met a kind resident of the new condo walking her dog. She is Allergic to Wasps, so I've sent an email to committee. That reminds me, I have to advise them as DisAbility Consultant: Thanks for Building Wheelchair Accessible Boxes! But duh, Wheels get Stuck in the Gravel. I had to call some good folks to help me get unstuck! You could do a PhD on how many people ignored my pleas fir help.

"You work for the Combined Forces Safety Enhancement Unit ? yO, Moral Civility ? Some of the Residents are very NIMBY and Ableist, Patronizing and Condescending! They sent 'Jack & Foxy' to rough me up with his Neo_Green sKateboard ! FoXy was surprised when he snapped his gloves on and flexed his muscles, preparing to take me down. It was scary! Next afternoon, an Old Man came out with his Mother's Cane, accusing me of camping out on the property? WTF ? I live in Coal Harbour! Pshaw! With the better than thou attitude think I’ll stick to our Roof Top Gardens.

Went to visit a friend in Kerrisdale and a woman starts taking pictures of me. Why ? To tell you the truth, i'd rather get into a Bar Fight with Wasps or Drag Race VPD to Siwash Rock, than entertain any White Privilege of Proud Boys & Girls or Extinction Rebellion. Seems like their inciting the young and desperate to Riot. I’m practicing Do-Re-Mi's in the Garden ! i wonder how the uppity neighbours will be when the Field at their 'rear' entrance is built for First Nation Students at the University of Bee Zee? Are they Aware we are in Musquem and Coast Salish Territory?”

Cambridge says," some of the residents think they own the Field, yet it is Public Property. My Colleague Ravinder said, “so long as you're singing after dawn and before dusk you should feel ‘welcome’ to sing and rehearse for your Dis_Abled Super S|H|E|R|O|S and other Motley Coloured Roles. I know I know, you say your lines “here's your sword, here's your flame ! oops, sorry I dropped it.” Ha Ha. if anyone bothers you call 911. You certainly play the Fool, but don't be an iDiot ! Watch out for Wasps, Trolls and Charge your Batteries ! We can't keep getting Called out to Rescue and Push you Manually Three Blocks Home. Power Wheelchairs are Fricking Heavy ! ... Now, don't go AWOL, eH ! or be Singing in the Wee Hours of the Morning on the Edge o’ Mountains ! We don't want to be Peeling you off Seawalls.. LoL “

One Day while I performed calisthenics of voice and lungs, lo and be hold a Trumpeter started playing. We mostly practised scales but ventured into improv Territories. Last time round the Garden, wheels were stuck in the MuD. Joyce & David heard me call and attempted to pull or push the chair and fool out of Marsh. We called 911, and VFD drove round in 5 min pushing chair and myself out of the Lost Lagoon. Barely made it home with battery blinking on Batteries last cell and with dead phone !

Instead of studying Opera at University of Bee Zeeee, maybe I ought to take a Course in Mechanics of Levitation or AeroDynamics / AeroDynamos ?

WAVES of KOKORO: Silent Spring and Noise
My father learned Gaelic English French Latin, and like myself lives fascinated by the Derivation of Words. I love Partridge’s Etymological Dictionary ! He worked with his Father, an Auctioneer, at the Bloodstock Auctions creating Catalogs for the Lineage of the Race Horses.
At the young age of 28, me father John took the Boat from Ireland to Montréal and Canadian Pacific Railway to Vancouver. Like any immigrant he was Looking to Work and Provide a Good Life for da Family. With Reference Letter he was offered Work as a Salesman of Furniture & Appliances at Wosks on Hastings Street. I remember him saying the best salesman is an Honest Salesman.
Family bought a house in Coquitlam, later Cambie Street. Riding with his colleague on the way to work, he was invited to have a Drink. After a while, he was told he’d have to buy his own Bottle. Mum started picking him up off the floor. He was convinced to invest in a Gold Mine, which did not exist. Dad’s Lawyer convinced my Mom to sell the House. They had a Divorce. I was 6.
Did I tell you ? I came o’er a Faerie in me Mother’s Womb? I was a Wee Child, growing up Wild and Free by the Waters of the Salish Sea in Khatsalano, with Irish Tales & Mythologies in me Veins and Hearing Songs and Stories of Indigenous. Raised by a Single Mother Proud to be Union and NDP, I grew up on ‘Bread and Roses’ and Greek Food. Mum’s boyfriend played Soccer with the Greek Olympics, before becoming the WhiteCaps, maybe igniting her Spanish Heritage, Ola !
Mom believed I got MS in Nelson, BC. Do you know there’s a Smelter Plant in Castlegar ? Pockets of MS in Kootenay and Washington State. Multiple Sclerosis is a Neuro Musculo Skeletal Disease . What else are we but Spirit ? Who is eXtinction Rebellion ? Is Elon Musk a Neo-Colonist ?
Scientist and Researcher, Rachel Carson wrote ‘Silent Spring’ in 1965, warning that pesticides fertilizers sprayed on produce to kill bugs, would also kill birds, bees and humans. A significant figure in ecological awareness, demonized by deniers with agendas, she died of Cancer. Now, Parkinsons has been linked to Pesticides.

Future ages will certainly look back upon us as a people so immersed in the pursuit of wealth as to be blind to higher considerations (ARW)
Who is DuhWiñ? Darwin, Charles? Who is Alfred Russelll Wallace ? “Alfred Russell Wallace is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection; his paper on the subject was jointly published with some of Charles Darwin's writings in 1858.”(wiki) Six months later, Charles Darwin published his Theory of Evolution. Darwins field studies were in the Galapagos, while Wallace’s field studies were in Indonesia. Ali brought the bird of Paradise to Wallace, “bringing to his astonished employer the extraordinary new species of Bird of Paradise, subsequently described, not as Ali's, but Wallace's Standard Wing Semioptera wallacii.”
rEvolutionary Theori & Publishing: Whose Voice & Narrative ? Copyright: who's on first who's on second who's on third ? Indi_Publishing and Original Voice. Studying with Barry Truax, John Oswald wrote ‘Plunderphonics as a Compositional Prerogative’ . Compliments to the Composer ? Plunderphonics with Permission ? Àppropriation versus Protocols of Civility and Respect? Does the Bird of Paradise have Wings and Songs ? Who is Kukai ? Who is Kuki? Indeed, they are Japanese Philosophers ! Who is WB Yeats ? is Maude really Gonne ? Ali is my Neighbour, journeying from Syria to Canada. Cool Fellow !
I’m waiting for the Bus, ahead of the Sign so I can Wave to the Driver. Joe Schmo passes all 20 people waiting and stands right beside me. The bus starts arriving and he asks me “Are you getting on? I’ll wave the bus to stop”! I say “Thank You, I can wave my self.” Schmo knows the Disabled can have an attendant ride for free. Was he going to pretend to be my attendant ? As the Bus Driver is distracted lowering the ramp for me, Joe climbs through the open back door. Young Woman does the same thing, a month later. Human Adaptation ? Survival of the Quickest to Catch on and use the Disabled for Monthly Stipend ? Times is Getting Nasty. I’ll let em ride with me pretending … what ? Human Beings are really Poor. Ain’t no free ride, I just sing the blues. I don’t jack your tax. It’s fake news !

Searching for Ali Wallace: a Film
The intention of the team led by Gathorne Cranbrook and film-maker Jamie Curtis-Hayward was to create a coherent number of clips put together by two Indonesian colleagues, June Thio (professional film-maker) and Saleh Amin ('Ale'), narrator, to compose a documentary in bahasa that will justify the standing of Ali Wallace (as he named himself) as a self-taught naturalist-collector and Indonesian hero, whose endeavours saved the life and helped to create the reputation of his employer, Alfred Russel Wallace. Wallace is famous as the co-originator, with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution by natural selection, arguably the most significant advance in biology of the 19th Century. He developed the theory as a naturalist-collector in island south-east Asia, including Sarawak from November 1854 to January 1856. Wallace brought a new recruit, a Malay youth known only by his name, Ali. In his contemporary journal, his letters home and in later publications, Wallace consistently referred to Ali in terms such as 'My Borneo boy’, 'My Sarawak lad', but gave no other clues to his background. This conundrum is the core issue tackled in the film. In his autobiography (My Life, 1905) Wallace published a posed studio photograph of Ali, taken in Singapore. He acknowledged his debt to Ali for his loyalty, often acting as nurse during Wallace's many bouts of debilitating illness, as well as his skills as a collector and manager. Other glimpses of Ali are found in The Malay Archipelago (1869): he was a Muslim; married In Ternate, and at first stayed on that island with his new wife while Wallace continued his collecting trips. His clothing and appearance can be seen in two illustrations Decisive episodes in the story of Ali include his achievement in collecting and bringing in to his astonished employer the extraordinary new species of Bird of Paradise, subsequently described, not as Ali's, but Wallace's Standard Wing Semioptera wallacii. The film was first shown in Kuching, sponsored by the Friends of Sarawak Museum in October 2016 and later had its UK Premiere at the Suffolk Aldeburgh Documentary Film Festival in November 2016. The Sarawak Association will hold a joint meeting with the British Malaysia Society at the Royal Overseas League in London on 20 March 2017

CHAX'AI to OTTAWA: BALLERINA in a BOX (condo)
Antoinètte Winden (Windigo*) contacted me via Facebook in the Fall of 2013. We met 20 years before at a party for Dance Troupe. I remember feeling overwhelmed. There were Ants Crawling across the Family’s Living Room Floor. I was wary of meeting. I’d been Abused Too Many Times. She'd Recently been Diagnosed with Cancer. I agreed to meet.
Antoinette said "I'm going to keep you company, now your Mom has gone ... later "my Yoga instructor’s Girlfriend is Jealous of me" ... My Condo is $300,000 Dollars … You’re Safer in the Downtown Eastside than I am.” … “We can only Kiss on the Lips” It got Worse from there …
PATIENCE & ABSURDITY (2012, Documentary, Paula Cole Director) premiered at WAM in Spring 2012. Thanks to www.KICKSTART.ca and WWW.MOVINGIMAGES.CA | WE were at the GALA ! March. Two weeks later Mum went into the Short Term Observation Program, and never came home. I thought she’d be home in 2 weeks. While experiencing Lewy Body Dementia, Sylvia told me to “Sit Down but Don't Eat the Biscuit. The Train will be arriving to take us Home." Sylvia passed away June 3, 2013. My Mum’s Ashes Rest in the Columbarium at Saint James Anglican Church in the Downtown Eastside. (DTES) Luck Luki.
I began my long-term project WHEELS Soundscapes: Voices of People with Disabilities in 1997 at SFU & VAMS located at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. Sam Sullivan and Dave Symington co-founded VAMS in 1988, 20 years earlier. Over the Years meeting at Dis_Ability Events, Dave and I had spoken about Working Together. Before She Died Mum asked “Why aren't You Playing Music with your Friends anymore ? Listening to Mum, I entered VAMS Music Studio as a Client to Create Music with Dave Symington. i visited Mum every day, while creating THE FEATHER SONGBOOK & CD (2016)
Bringing folks together I’d performed with 30 and 40 years ago including on Sax and Flute, Ross Barrett of the Carnival Band, Wendy Solloway on Bass. I heard Thomas Beckman playing beautiful Viola on the Coal Harbour Seawall, extending an invitation. Brenda Baird notated the Songbook and joined us on Keys, with Nicole Dextras Designing the Songbook, including a Map of Ireland !
Antoinette told me, “My Mother Hates Me, Mother went to Bali”. Her Father Richard (looks like Moody Allen) remarried a younger Artisté, Fancy Talker, and formed the Richard Winden Ensemble with his Two Daughters and a Girl named Marla Called. 20 years of playing New Music for Young Audiences with Symphonic, Found & Made Instruments, Bowed Metal gave Woody, I mean Dick, I mean Rick, considerable Access to Youth. The Ensemble later became the Winden Duo with more Colonial Arts Grants to continue ‘Follies for Young Folk’.
Bumbling into the Duo in the West End, out for ‘meetings’, at Ramen Restaurants and Sylvia Hotel (me Mother’s 😉). Years after the Fact, I remember Talk of a Pedophile running an International Kids Festival. Sounding Indemic Systemic Pandemic ? Referring to Auntie Marla as she spoke with her Cats, Mr Fluffy and Yellow, gave me another Strange Feeling. Was this another complex psychological adjustment Antoinette had Adopted? Why was She Anorexic and Obsessed about Body Mass IndeX? Who was Auntie Marla, Groomed to be Richard’s Mistress in Music to a New Group of Youngsters ? Wind Instruments Blaring Louder !
Antoinette commenting “it’s easier for you as a Free Lance Artist, because you have a Guaranteed Income and Have Help”. She began to expect me to Pay for Everything without Question, which was okay for a while, but my Monthly Disability Pension began dwindling. “Why do you go to the Food Bank ?” More often than not Three Hours Late? Like a Fool, I’d Wait and Wait, till my Body Screamed “Am I Not Worthy ?”  (Wayne’s World)
She said “You’re Lucky. I don’t eXpect much, like other Girlfriends”. Constanty Knitting. Constantly Talking. Antoinette would say, “I Don’t See you as Disabled”. Rather than a Compliment, this felt like a Denial of my Lived Experience, because MS had Physically Disabled my Body. I had built a Body of Work receiving recognition, despite challenges being disabled and because of disability. One Door Closes, other Doors Open. Soundscape Composer, but Obviously Still Naive! What Part of Disability Don’t You uNder_Stand ? Medical or Social Model ? However you spell it, Disability is a Pain in the Butt !
Antionette began poking right my arm. “Why don’t you use it more?” Antionette began poking my arm again again poked again my right arm “Why don’t you use it more? the weight looks good on you, because of your body type. You laugh at your own jokes”. Butterflies began to Fly in my Stomach. Still, i had Practiced Silence, being Obliging All My Life. But, She Loved me ? Right ?
Antoinette said “I feel Invisible as an Artist … We Should Play Together”. I said “O, would you like to play on my Album?” I Loved Her ! Of course my Willingness to Love and Be Loved had once again Set me uP for Falling and Crash Landing.
I felt Moved and Obliged to invite Antionette. What had been a Joyful Process, began to be Corrupted by Talk Talk Talk. my Nerves began to Fray. “Your Producer and Engineer Can’t Hear What they ‘re Doing. They told me their Ears are Wrecked from Listening to Loud Speakers. You’re Not in Control of Your Own Project” Bells Ringing Louder & Louder. Sexual Games of Cat and Mouse Arousal Denial Laughing Making Fun BeliTTling me like a Dominatrix in Sheep’s Clothing.
Antoinette said “I have to Be in Control. You can See other People if You want “ She was seeing an old Flame. Antoinette practiced Laisé Faire Love, like her Father Richard. We Were Friends ? I was once again Playing a Pierrot in Love with Love? I was Antoinette’s Side Walk ? Antionette’s Musical Puppet was Falling Apart. Antoinettes’ Side Kick ? I started to Stay uP Late and Drink. Drink & Drive.
I was invited to sit on the Jury for the first Disability Arts Grant, Canada Arts Council, Ottawa Winter, 2015. On returning one of my colleagues told me of his Observations that “Antoinette was Late, Talked All about Herself, Played All over Others, was Condescending to You”. My Brain was Blown! O No, Not Again ! I started to stay up late and Drink in Sin City. University Grads & Mother’s Doing Olympic Circus on Poles ! Pole Dancers are some of my Best Friends. I was Sixteen again with T & her Mom, the Rose McGregor, at Izzy’s Supper Club when the West was Young. I started to Stare at Fate and Fall to Earth Faster Faster Faster My Mind Started Spinning Repeat Repeat Repeat !
Antionette said “I Can Help You”. I remembered these ‘Words by Abuse’. Red Lights Flashing. ! I lost it and yelled “Why are you even playing on my Album?” Antoinette said, “because I Believed in You”. Did She Ever Love me or was I Just a Pawn in a Bizarre Master Plan ? Woody, I mean Dick, said “I’m too Old for This”. Honestly, I’m Too Young for Prick Tricks Clit Bait Click, as are Young Audiences. What More Can I Say ? I I yelled at her, but I loved her. My mind began going on a mental roller coaster going round and round, attempting Suicide for the First Time, Summer 2016. Should I Sue ? Bring in Aaron Farrow to inVestigate ? Aaron Chap Book ? Write a song ? Go Back to Dancing Butoh ? Take up Singing Kukuruku ?

COMMUNITY HULLABALOO & CIVIL MORALITY: i see bc & mcgreedy mobility dis
Good News ! I've got new batteries ! the Occupational Therapist Liza, rode in on her horse from Saskatchewan with bright red rain boots and a baby girl on each Hip. i guess, you didn't know my wheelchair was hit by a car in 2020, which is why it was in the repair shop at McGreedy’s Mobility. Salesman said my chair looked “weird’, saying it was Off Kilter. I admitted i’d been backed into while crossing a sidewalk at Denman. I was embarrassed. Salesman (conflict of interest, no?) advised me to start an ICBC Claim saying“you’ll get a new one, but don’t tell them I told you”. I began ICBC Claim, needing a working chair. In the end, ICBC did due diligence, while I did not in seeking out witnesses and filing a police report. I had as usual driven away in fear (like a bunny wit ptsd) screaming bloody tell! I had to bring my Bro and Lawyer on board when logic utterly failed me.
McGreedy’s ? I recall the lead technician, Lutisia always making me feel like she was interrupted from what ever she was doing, that was far more important, and what ever repair they had to make was a bother. While the M1 was sitting in the shop for 6 months, I drove my old wheelchair with my heart on my sleeve and developed severe sciatica, till it fell apart . It turns out it only needed ball bearings changed and regular maintenance, eXtended arm to reach middle of body cause I need both hands to drive. Having trouble with the old metal jalopies ? Laugh Out Loud ! We could start a back alley business fiXing wheelchairs …. Hey, Mel pass me the glue gun and 5/17 inch wrench. I gotta make this frickin’ chair drive straight. Right now she drives a bit crooked with Wobblies. And the Noise. Let me tell you ! Sounds like a Soprano singing High Notes!
OK, wait. There are more problems than anticipated. I was reclining Wheelchair in Tilt Mode, when it did not stop but continued till I was doing Yoga standing on my head. 911! Super Heroes from VFD put me in my manual, where my sacrum became increasingly sore over 2 Weeks. I’ll be in Better Condition when I‘ve a new chair. Now I’m in a wonky toy wheel chair, waiting, and hoping for expedition. You maybe twice married, before I die or get a new wheelchair. No Seriously, BC Ministry Vancouver Coast Health & Feed Bank make life liveable! Liza and Mr Bee Quatch are requesting the wheelchair be replaced and ergonomically correct, no longer in dis_repair due to delays of ‘maintenance’ and being hit by a car, but in the good hands and 14 inch feet of Zob at Honourable Mobility Energy (HME). My Super Heroes are Liza, Mr Bee Q, Zob, Community Health Workers, Kind Neighours & Folks, Good Vancouver Police Members and Fire Dept. I’ve seen the worst and best of people at the West Inn and Downtown Eastside. I look and dress different. … usually, with head phones … oooo, be aware … like Christopher Ward (Black Velvet), I’m usually listening to CBC Classical Jazz Opera ReClaimed Marvin’s Room StromboShow 105.7  CBC
I still have Mobility in my Left Arm & Hand, Mouth, Eyes, Ears, Nose. My Right Arm is only Good at Gripping! Now, having more pain, due to strain. In Butoh there is movement so slow you appear still and moving. It is the movement in stillness. When I can longer move, will I still be practising Butoh ? It is ironic, this stillness in moving. KOKORO Dance !
‘only by the form, the pattern, can words or music reach the stillness,
as a chinese jar still moves perpetually in its stillness’ (TS Eliot, Four Quartets, Burnt Norton V)
Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabyashi of KOKORO Dance have taught me more than I can ever say. Deep Love for these two who’ve dedicated them selves to Dance with Kokoro (heart mind spirit soul). I created 5 masks for the performance WOMAN in FireHall 1987. The image of Beauty/Victim, travels on T-shirts of KOKORO Dance. By coincidence, i sold my Fender StratoCaster to Jay Hirabyashi who gave the Strat to Jazz Guitarist Tony Wilson who collaborates with Russell Wallace.
Meanwhile the Bird Lady & Family still Feed the Birds and Squirrels (20 years plûs) and you Wonder Why We have Mice, Racoons, Skunks in the Building? Married Man asks if I want company for the Night ! Get a Life! Now, he has Strangers living in his Suite, who give me Dirty Looks. I don’’t feel Safe with some Folks. Teach your Children to be Aware of Abuse and Don't Feed the Coyotes or Birds. There was a suspicion among park staff, Coyotes were Chasing their Tails after ingesting drugs dropped by Junkies as well as habituation to humans feeding food to wildlife ? a Dog became very sick eating gummy bears of cannabis laced with fentanyl. ooooOOOWWW Are people attacking others due to Covid Chaos, Racism, Brain Damage due to Fentanyl and Booze ? Why does the government sell booZe ?
I'm in the Elevator Trying to Key the Roof Lock, which is always Sticking. Elevator Opens Twice. Second time, Spring says "JESUS she's Still Here”. Glad People can Walk up Stairs ! Another Neighbour says “This Place is Cursed”, has Zombies for Friends and Son is playing with Knives. She Won't Tell Her Son he has Cherokee Ancestry, but Shite ? iiiioooooOOO i Don’t Know. Cherokee People Cherokee Tribe ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ0gobSHgIs
Winter Year End Party, Beautiful Alcoholic Chimney (Lies all the Time to Family) used me as a Tool as she cleverly slipped a Dozen Bottles of Booze in my Bag on the side of my WheelChair. Coming to use Bathroom, Nikita put 2 bottles in my Fridge, while her Friend helped herself to my CD Collection promising to return them and never did. Nikita told me of the time she beat up Van Damme, because she had to ! Gymnast Training, comes in Handy Man !
Nikita smoked in my home during break from Bored Meetings, and rolled for me at what cost ? i said "WE are not allowed to smoke in our places, and especially before my CHW (Community Health Worker)!” Last time Nikita came to 'borrow' tobacco, promising to roll me some. She came in the room, while my CHW was putting me to bed and put the open bag on my table. i do not have Tobacco near my CHWs in case of Allergies or Asthma. Behind Ruby Miracle’s back, Nikita made the Weirdest Derogatory Rolling her Eyes immature Face I’ve ever seen i! it was totally disrespect full of worker (and meself). i had enough ! Funny thing about being on the spectrum, some of us can't tell when we are being disrespected and used, until you try to do that to a friend.
Nector who was head of the Gardening Commitee, yelled at me when asked for garbage bags, and if there might be a gardening member who would want to help to clear some of the dead brush! Loran’s 70 year old Mother and Children helped ! i'm really getting tired of people mistreating Spirit of Community. Money from our Budget to lay bricks on our sidewalks, cause it gets Muddy in Rainy Season? We had to complete what the original architects and city did not. It is more functional for all people, especially mobility users. Life in a Rain Forest ! Condos built on Shifting Sand
Meanwhile, i am trying to Live a Peace Full Life Composing, yO !!! yO yO, Yellow Yellow yOyOyO Yellow YoYoyO Hello Yellow. I’m going to put some planters and flowers along the Boulevard. Mean Streets to Green Streets?

Chapter 11 VANCOUVER / FUN_K_HOOVER & OUT: Community Health Workers and i
“Estragon, sitting on a low mound is trying to take off his boot” (Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett, 1952)
Thank You > Salamed Po ~ Ruby Miracle, came from Maharlica with her Four boys to Canada. Maharlica is the original name of the Philippines, before it was Colonized by King Philip and Spanish Missionaries. Ireland was Colonized for 800 years by English, just as the Royal Maharlica of 17,000 Islands were Colonized by Spanish and renamed after King Philip. Ruby looks like Meagan.
Gurrah Mea Mah Agat. Aunt Dot, moved from Ireland with her  Four Boys to Canada after her divorcing her Husband in England.  Me mum Sylvia, twelve years older loved her Step Sisters Dot and Dolly, recalling how they were like playing with Dolls. Aunt Dolly, a Roman Catholic Nun, worked as Social Worker & Counsellor in Peru and Johannesburg during Aparteid. Aunt Dot has Vitiligo like Michael Jackson … a Rose Tree of multi-coloured skin … not like, do all you people up in Canada still call people Coloured ? but why do folks want to hide, smooth out colours with make up, when we can celebrate? O … I get it …. “I’m going down to the old town road gonna ride my horse till I can’t no more can’t no body tell me nothin” (Lil NasX) I’m gonna ride my horse to the hotel room can’t no body tell me nothin’
Mamnoon … Ta Sha Koor … Spasiba … I met an Angel from Iran ... Her name is Ruhi … Her Father is Russian / Her Mother Turkish … We have many Laughs Together. Ruhi is Retiring Soon. Xie Xie (shay shay) Wei Wei is a Beautiful Rose from China. I love her accent. Thank You Xie Xie (shay shay)
Thuk Jee Ché … Fan Zine Dah of Tibetan Lineage was born in India, growing to a teen, when her Family moved to Canada. Great Laughter ! All ways Singing. She told me the Bell on my Door was  (as originally assumed) Not a Temple Bell, but a Cow Bell ! On Opening my door, it’s Beautiful Clear Tones Ring Out. Poor Temples. ‘Poor Cow’ (Tanita Takaram).
Marami Salamed Po … When Felicia got hit crossing Georgia Street, she catapulted off the hood of the SUV into a Triple Somersault Back Flipping onto her Feet, and then came to my home and rescued me having fallen out of my Manual Wheelchair ! Did I remember to tell you Community Health Workers are some of my Super Heroes.
I am a Happy Fool. Not a Sacred Clown. Maybe, wit Silly Methods to Madness ? to remember names I will often reverse letters. It only took me 50 years to figure out 'sylvi' backwards kinda sounds like 'elviS’, tho you have to bend letters and notes like blues harp.
me Mother and Father came from Ireland in 1956. my Father took the Train out first. me Mother flew to New York with 3 Children. My Sister and i were born in Coast Salish Territory, Vancouver. You might say, I'm straight off the boat from Ireland. Sylvia, me mother, would say "Bill Hayley is the King of Rock & Roll, not ELVIS" and ask why I made that squeaky noise when I slid Bar Chords across the Strings. Great-Great-Grandmother Isabella de Fernandez from Spain married Irish Man John Graves. Mum would say “Why a Spanish Lady would marry an Irish Man we’ll never know”. Their daughter Franchesca, had an affair with Bobby Lee from Jamaica who Boxed in England. Grandmother Stella performed Opera & Musical Theater at the Abbey and Gaeity Theatres in Dublin, Ireland. Being Mulatto (sic) a Woman of Colour, she sang in Showboat which is old news. Summer Time & Living is Easy https://www.irishtimes.com/.../telling-the-untold-stories... http://mixedmuseum.org.uk/amri-exhibition/
During Uts’am / Witness, Chief Bill Williams Telal Semkin Siyam told me Families were forced out of their homes in Khàtsalano 1905. As child from Grade 4-7, Swimming everyday and evenings in summer in the pool below the Kitsilano Showboat. Dreaming of Philosophy and Poetry, Singing wit Seagulls on the Way to Elementary School. My mom’s stepbrother asked me to lay down with him, while my mom was at work. I went out to sea, envisioning poetry and philosophy. A friend of Mum’s BoyFriend, a sailor off a ship, touched me in the back of the car. 8 years old ! I thought "I must be a Prostitute”. It was the beginning of abuse, which I’ve experienced too much throughout life.
I was a Strong Child. I was a Brave Child. Now, I’m in the Care of the Ministry, a Ward of the State in the “Ministry of Funny Walks” (monty python, bbc). Don’t Do Drugs and Don’t Drive Backwards. “Choking on my Cookie” (Dave Symington) Chokin on my Wookie Chokin on my Chicken Drive Fast Drive Safe but Don’t Do Drugs and Don’t Drive Backwards. “Chokin on my Cookie”
Times is Getting Nasty. Extinction Rebellion ? Hire the Home Less, say things like FTP? I asked a PoliceMan what it Meant, and He Backed aWay. People are Scared. I'm a target taking to wearing a helmut for the rain and my brain. I'm getting weaker. the helmut protects me from rain and being hit on the head. I was crossing Robson Street, when I was projected out of my chair flipping over so the back of my head hit the pavement, cars using my brain as target practice, till kind neighbourhood super heroes appeared including Van Fire Dept lifting me back to chair. Did I tell you, once a Pole Dancer threw a glass at Drunk Boer who touched her. Instead it hit me, bouncing off my glasses, onto my knows. Cut me a bit, leaving no scars but digital memories. You could say I got into a Bar Fight with a Pole Dancer, and she Won.

Chapter 12
SOLACE SANCTUARY SOUND: Bella Ciao, innisFree & Life of i
I imagine this work will be my Best and Final Composition? You never know. Maybe I’ll play Harmonica till I’m 80. I won’t Remember much of this, after I’ve Written it Down. I am 06 going on 61 after all! Maybe you’ll Forget after you’ve Read this, or Did Not Read this, then or now? I hope it Brought Laughter. Did you Learn somethin’ New ? Old ? How are You? How Do You Do ? Did I repeat myself a few too many times ? Did you laugh ? Why is the Sky Blue, and Grey with Rain? Have you Hugged a Rainbow, or Tree Today?
Me Brother (o Danny Boy) with BeLoved Wife is meeting their Seven Month Old Grand Daughter Maisé. Maybe this eBook is to Maisé and other Young Kin, as if I’m writing ’12 Letters to Young Composers’ BE Aware of Opera ’n Rock ’n Roll . Plant Your Feet Firmly on da Soil or Turf. Do you know Why they Don’t Pronounce the ‘H’ in Ireland ? Because there is no ‘H’ in Ireland.
‘Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling > From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling > It's you must go and I must bide” (F.E. Weatherly, 1913)
My 70 year old Sister is eXperiencing Anxiety and Memory Problems. Early Onset Dementia ? Maybe, it Runs in the Family. Or is it da Smoking ? Her head Hurts ! My head hurts. Did she hit her head when she fell ? What was I just saying ? o, Yes. Circle of Life. Circle of Fifths. Will We Remember how to help each other When We are Old & can’t remember how to help ourselves ? I asked my aunt if she remembered the name of her Grandfather. She said “Smith. No, What was his first name ? I can’t remember.” Then she said “Bobby. That’s it. Bobbie Lee !  Bobby Smith ?
Is David in Avalon singing Musical Theatre with his Dog Penelope? Hello Dolly ! Is Maestro Fresh Wes ‘letting his back bone slide’ out West, while Simu Liu dances Martial Arts ala Shangi Chi and Jenny on the Block, like Bat WoMen, take on Downtown East Side ? I remember when I was a member of the Health Club, Rocky aka Sylvester DocKed his Yacht Out Back o West Inn, climbing over the Fence with Security and Family into the Pool. Why didn’t they just use the Private Gate ?
if I Die or Dis Appear, you know They will have Gotten to Me. Corporeal Priceless, said "he is a Very Busy Man", appearing to be excited (or reading from a script) prejudging to spend valuable resources investigating me. i'll admit they will find a fool wit musical and lyrical endeavours, even pissing some people of wit me Folk_Operatic 2.5 Activated Octave Range, while writing poetry to amuse ! I already gave the VPD & RCMP 'The Feather' (2016) what more can i say? Yes you can knock me over with a feather or break my heart with trumped up charges, to frame me and blame for singing too loud, cause it sounds like yelling especially when singing in English.
Folks open the door for me at BlenZzzz in the Morn. Feels good hanging with friends in Guilford Forest near Kanuka Ranch, and laugh (tho it’s really not funny) about Old Thespians with Walkers & Canes asking me "are you a vagrant, variant, vagabond" ? with my reply "no, but there will be a High Fidelity Bakery, next door to Breaking Bean Café". Actually, it’s going to be a Haute Couture Hair Salon! AAaaaaaChooo ! Bless You !
You can put me out to pasture with Van Police ReTired Horses. I was never one for the Industry of Music (Music is Money, Adorno) or subsisting in a Managers Stables where Actors are hired to buy & sell the latest. No, put me out to pasture and roof top gardens where I can meet with Super Nova Mikiuk Nanuk ! Love you all. just stay 6 feet away and Shut the Trucks up ! cause them NeoNasties want War to feed the Far Right Coffers destroying Democracy. Just as, it may be True some Trolls reek of fish fried in beef tallow and smack o biker gangs and good ol' white privilage saying gangster like "I'm watching you". Really ?  Watch me Compose ? How Boring for You !
'the life of i’, includes meeting a Mohan / MoHawk whose cousin was killed by the ‘Furrey Fix,' who Got off Scot {feasting on Maple Syrup and Bacon} Free, cause not so venerable police members were banging witnesses. Case thrown out o Court. Gangsters kill the innocent in their cross fire ... no justice ... on stolen land ... oil companies flying false flags like writing 'land back' is easy, No ? I’m a sharp shooter of words, rapper under cover going way back wit Eminem kneeling and dancing up a storm on Turtle Island, or at least Rain Dancing in the Forest to Different Beats. Buffy Sainte-Marie said on CBC in 1970’s  "you know, Native people discovered Columbus in 1492". Dis covered on the beach you say, not yet called English Bay.
moi Sylvi, wit dis aspergers multiple sclerosis bi polarity ptsd size 10 feet, 5 foot 5 inches, 3 feet in wheel chair, prefers riding on side streets and alleys to avoid bicycles and pedestrians on side walks; enjoys hitting air when driving over tree roots; appears friendly with neighbours; But sings Opera when Driving. Drives in Circles and Yells when Threatened or Confronted with People who knock her hand off the ‘joystick’ or swerve in front forcing her to brake. How many times waiting in line do people pretend I’m not there and walk in front of me in banks and coffee shops ?
I seriously didn't know what FTP stands for, until I asked an officer who was part of unit dealing downtown wit Rally of Rebellion, and he backed away. o, now I get it. shite! I still don't know what Extinction Rebellion is, but a VPD member told me "o yeah, we know all about em" as she scowled snickered, like another officer assuming I was part of trying to shut down Lion’s Gate Bridge, with a loaded grin and insincere tones, said out his window ‘Have a Nice day’ ? think I'll drink a Guinness and Celebrate St Patricks Day Gung Hey Fa Choy Happy NowRuz !
my friend and colleague, a true Brother Bear QEKIYEKSUT composed TRUTH & REVOLUTION 2022. i did write and play folk rock walking my talk, till ‘i could not, and ‘Soundscape Composition as Context based Creation' (see TruaX, Barry) swept me off my feet to be diversified as an ElectroAcoustic Free Radical with Audio Abilities and Friends who live and breathe animism and ceremony on the ground and in 8 channel ... o to be on ‘lake isle of inissfree' (wb yeats) with other Faeries and Hobbits like Human Rabbits whom possibly inspired 'Watership Down' and The LoraX… Hobbits, like Ninja’s wearing invisible Rings a Bell … GonG …. P21

BUFFALO SPIRIT (1:56) 1996

Composed by Russell Wallace for the Aboriginal Dance Project.

Choreographer and Program Director-Alejandro Ronceria

Composition includes a recorded memo from (Head of Department of

Indian Affairs Canada and poet). Duncan Campbell Scott regarding Native

Peoples and Dance. It was circulated to agents in the Department of

Indian Affairs in December 1921 hoping "to use your utmost endeavours to

dissuade the Indians from excessive indulgence in the practice of

dancing…should suppress any dances which cause waste of time …

dissipate their energies and abandon themselves to demoralizing

amusements … you can obtain control and keep them, and this obstacle

to continued progress will then disappear … Your Very Truly

Dept of Indian Affairs, Canada Ottawa, 15th December 1921

Dear Sir

It is observed with Alarm that the holding of Dances by the Indians on their

Reserves is on the increase, and that these practices tend to disorganize

the efforts which the department is putting forth to make them self

supported.

I have therefore, to direct you to use your utmost endeavours to dissuadethe Indians from excessive indulgence in the practice of dancing. You

should suppress any dances which cause waste of time, interfere with the

occupation of the Indians, unsettle them for serious work, injure their

health or encourage them in sloth and idleness.

You should also dissuade and if possible, prevent them from leaving their

reserves for the purpose of attending fairs, exhibitions etc. when their

absence would result in their own farming and other interests being

neglected.

It is realized that reasonable amusement and recreation should be enjoyed

by Indians, but they should not be allowed to dissipate their energies and

abandon themselves to demoralizing amusements. By the use of tact and

firmness you can obtain control and keep them, and this obstacle to

continued progress will then disappear.

Except where further information is desired, there will be no necessity to

acknowledge the receipt of this circular.

Yours Very Truly

CHANGES OF WIND (8:04) 2014

RUSSELL WALLACE director composer writer

PENNY COUCHIE choreographer

Out on the land and in the mountains, the wind moves through the

senses. We see the grass moving, we hear the movement of the

branches of the trees and we feel the wind on our face andsometimes we can even feel the breath being taken right out of us.

The wind does bring great change sometimes. We see the debris

from the torn trees and any structure that dares stand against the

wind. The wind then is a catalyst. History is full of examples of great

change and with those events are the people that are there tearing

down branches and breaking limbs and making some trees fall. In

Indigenous cultures there have been many storms and there has been

a lot of debris left behind but there are still many trees standing. A lot

of our people have been isolated and blinded by the debris and whirl

around the urban centres getting stuck in circles in the core of the

city. Eventually some awaken and find others and work as the

grasses do when a wind comes, moving together. We reach out, we

find our support in others and then we dance with them.

Grandmother Song (2:10) 2020 Tzo'kam

(Lil'wat Nation) An old song that our mother Flora Wallace taught us. It

is a narrative song about a grandmother who, after losing her daughter,

must look after the grandchild in tough times. The grandmother grieves for

the loss of her daughter and cries as she walks and tries to comfort the

baby. The last part of the song talks about how the grandmother is

searching for goodness in this troubled world. I hope we all find goodness

or create goodness in this troubled world.

NEWS | 1 COMMENT

Lil’wat Nation composer Russell Wallace shares a new

video for his track Indian Head which was composed

in 1992 – the 500 year anniversary of Christopher

Columbus.

Russell Wallace has been a composer and traditional performer on the

west coast of Turtle Island for a couple of decades. He continues to release

material from his early catalogue – which both was before its time and has

stood the test of time. Recently he released a brand new video for his song

entitled Indian Head.

I asked him what his inspirations for the music and video were, he replied:

“It was written around the time of the 500 year anniversary of Columbus’

‘discovery’. At that time there was a lot of house and acid house music with

the sound of the whistle so I thought of the eagle whistle and thought it

would be cool to have a techno song with that in it as well as singers. I liked

the idea of gated sounds and thought that our voices have been cut out of

history many times. For the video, I thought about the images of ‘Indians’

and most of them aare men and they usually are just heads which says a

lot about what American history thinks about us….a bounty on ourheads…..Indian heads…..my head.”

Isolation Commissions #101 - Russell Wallace with Emily

M Cheung and Sam Dabrusin

Commissioned by Marissa Bender

Journey Song by Russell Wallace, arranged for SATB

Soprano and Alto - Emily M Cheung

Tenor - Sam Dabrusin

Bass - Russell Wallace

Our 101st Isolation Commission features the music of Russell Wallace,

performed by Russell with Emily M Cheung and Sam Dabrusin. Russell

was an integral part of our 2018 Summer Solstice event at Mountain View

Cemetery, and we're thrilled to have his music in this project."This song was written many years ago while working in Toronto. I had

been working in Toronto at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre and spent my

evenings in the community there. One night I was asked to dance in a

challenge dance. I danced low to the ground for as long as I could. That

evening I felt okay and was proud that I made it through the dance. The

next morning however, I could barely walk. My leg muscles protested at the

unexpected workout and I hobbled around the streets of Toronto to get to

work. In that hobble I found a rhythm and pattern and this song came to

me. I called it the Journey Song because it reminds me no matter how I feel

I must still carry on and do the work I need to do and was taught to do.

Despite the masks and isolation of this time we must sing and invite others

to sing with us in a safe way. Stay safe, connect with each other, and sing."

- Russell Wallace

Russell Wallace is a composer, producer and traditional singer from the

Lil’wat Nation in B.C. His music has been part of a number of soundtracks

(film and television) and theatre/dance productions across Canada. Most

recently Wallace received a Leo Award for Best Musical Score for a

documentary series, “1491: The Untold History of the Americas Before

Columbus”.

He was the composer in residence for the Chinook Winds Aboriginal Dance

program from 1996-2003 at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Commissions

include: the formation of Nunavut Gala in 1999, the Vancouver Peace

Conference in 2004 which hosted the Dalai Lama and other international

dignitaries, and various chamber ensembles and choirs. He has produced

CD’s that have been nominated for awards at the Juno’s, Canadian

Aboriginal Music Awards, and at the Native American Music Awards in the

USA. Currently Wallace works and teaches at the Native Education

College, Simon Fraser University, and Capilano University.

Recently returned from six years abroad in Europe, Emily M Cheung

currently divides her time between solo and ensemble engagements,

including the Vancouver Chamber Choir and Vancouver Cantata Singers

here in town, her international group, Time Ensemble, working with

children/communities in need, and performances with CircusWest, the

eatART Foundation’s Daisy (the world’s largest solar powered tricycle), and

in “Double Happiness: Detour this Way”, a new multimedia creation aboutcultural diaspora.

Also being featured performing in the 2019 Volvo SUV Aria campaign

sparked an interest in recording:

Sam Dabrusin is a multidisciplinary vocalist with proficiency in classical,

jazz, and contemporary idioms. Sam has been commissioned for

arrangements from quartets and choruses across Canada, and his radio

jingles have been heard on both C-FOX and CiTR. He currently sings with

the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Shaughnessy Heights United Church

Choir, The Squares barbershop chorus, and The Hot Teas contemporary A

Cappella ensemble. He co-directs the latter two, and is the musical director

for Soundscape A Cappella Chorus.

To support front line artists in this unprecedented time, and to foster

reflections on that time from our musical community, Little Chamber Music

has created the Isolation Commissions.

For $200, commissioners got to choose an artist to film a 4min video of

themselves performing at home, something that reflects the impact our

extraordinary social situation is having on their artistic practice. It might be

an improvisation, a favourite piece, a work that brings comfort, a work in

progress….that was up to the artist.

These videos are meant to be a snapshot of the lives of front-line artists

who have been heavily impacted by our current crisis, and the hope is that,

when we get through this, collectively they will form an artistic reflection of

this unprecedented and difficult time.

Q

Qekiyeksut (The Boy Who Will Wander) pays homage to the

traditional name that has influenced the growth of three

generations. Using music and spoken word, Qekiyeksut tells the

story of identity in the neighbourhood of what is now known as

Mount Pleasant.

Storyteller statement: Russell

Wallace

The Boy Who Will Wander is a name given to my dad who

passed the name onto me and I then passed it on to my eldest

son. All three of us were born in different places and even in

different countries but found that we all lived and wandered the

Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver in different stages of our lives.

This recording recounts the origin of our name and then lets it

reverberate between the glass buildings of Vancouver.

Story transcript00:15

My name is Qekiyeksut, the Boy Who Will Wander The Woods,

That No One Will Care For. This name belongs to my father and

also to my eldest son. The name was passed on through the

generations in ceremonies back in our home community in

Whistler, and Mount Currie, or Lil'wat.

00:49

The name was chosen for my Dad, by my grandmother's

midwives, back in 1916. You see, there had been a number of

babies that came before my Father. They all died at birth. They

were given loving and endearing names. The midwives came up

with a plan to ensure that the newest son would survive. They

planned to fool fate by giving a name that would not sound very

nice. A name that said, “this boy would not be loved or taken care

of.”

Fate was fooled, and my father survived and lived until he was 79

years old. My father was a hunter and Trapper, and he did

wander the woods to provide food for his family. As the family

grew to 11 children, my father stopped wandering and took up

residence in Vancouver on Main and 18th in the Mount Pleasant

area. I grew up in that house and left and wandered the country

and the world to work so I could feed and provide for my growing

family. My eldest son was born while our young, little family lived

at 22nd and Ontario. My eldest son grew up and became a bike

courier in the downtown Vancouver area. And he wandered those

streets to support himself.

Three generations of men, wandering and trying to take care of

ourselves and trying to take care of our loved ones because our

name tells fate that no one else will do that for us. We wander

because we love and we wander because we are loved.

03:31

Our name is Qekiyeksut.Credits

Red Mother

This is the story of Belle, the Red Mother, who travels

across what was once the people’s land with her horse

and companion, Blue Fred. Weaving contemporary

stories with traditional Kuna demon stories, it explores

the many facets of legacy and memory through theeyes of a cunning old Native woman who is living

through the wars on Indigenous people.

2012-2013

The compelling story of Belle, an old Native woman and

mother, who travels with her red cart and her magical horse

and companion Blue Fred, through endless wars, witnessing

the devastation of her people. The production explores the

desires of the craven women who live in Native society, not

the noble mothers but the failed ones.

Inspired by Mother Courage, Red Mother interweaves

Brechtian themes with demon tales an integral part of the

mythology of the Kuna people. Developed in collaboration

with Loose Change Productions, the production is a tribute to

those who have been lost and to their stories of survival.

Biography

Spiderwoman Theater is the oldest, continually running,

Indigenous women's theater company in the Americas.

Their work addresses cultural, social and political

issues of concern in the Indigenous and women’s

communities. Through the technique of "storyweaving",

they create their productions and realize their training

and outreach activities.

general admission Box office (212) 475-7710, www.lamama.org Runs 65

minutes; critics are invited on or after May 27.

NEW YORK, April 19--"Red Mother," featuring the celebrated Muriel Miguel,

co-founder of Obie-award-winning SpiderwomanTheater collective, will be

presented by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club Thursdays through

Sundays from May 27 to June 6.

The sixty-five minute play is the tale of Belle, an old Native woman who, with

horse and companion Blue Fred, travels across what was once the People's

land. Inspired by "Mother Courage," it weaves Brechtian themes with Kuna

demon tales and traditional stories with a contemporary soundscape. The one-

person show, which features original multimedia projections, elaborate fabric

hangings, and music, is a unique expression of the Native American

community, told from a woman's perspective. Murielle Borst, Artistic Director

of The Silvercloud Singers and Dancers and Miguel's daughter, directs. The

production has been developed in collaboration with New York-based Loose

Change Productions.

Muriel Miguel is a veteran of Off-Off-Broadway and an original member ofJoseph Chaikin's Open Theatre. The piece explodes the fiction of Indigenous

women as virtuous and noble "earth mothers," a stereotype perpetuated by

dominant culture as well as the Native population. In Brecht's play, Mother

Courage is morally equivocal, torn between protecting her children and war

profiteering. Similarly, fiery Belle, the Red Mother, challenges any traditional

image of motherhood--and yet does so with a sense of wit and abandon. Says

Miguel, "Belle speaks for and to the failed mothers, prostitutes, and addicts--

women living on the fringe."

"Red Mother" draws on the "storyweaving" technique of Spiderwoman Theater.

Founded in 1976, named for the Hopi goddess of creation, the troupe is the

oldest continuously operating women's theatre collective in North America. It

has featured Muriel Miguel and her two sisters, Lisa Mayo and Gloria Miguel,

through much of its existence. The "storyweaving" they developed blends

poetry, personal memory, and traditional Native stories, often in a cyclical

presentation, full of searing wit and boisterous humor.

As "Red Mother" moves through past and present, through the real and spirit

worlds, its lighting and projections identify points along the journey. To

accomplish these effects, original video projections have been developed by

Ottawa-based media artist Bear Witness, whose videos, chronicling the

effects of colonialism on native people, have been featured at the Sydney

Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, and the National Gallery of Canada, among

many venues. Set and costumes are by Christine Plunkett, project designer

for Dragone Entertainment Group, founded by Cirque Du Soleil director Franco

Dragone. Original music has been composed by Russell Wallace of the Lil'wat

Nation. Wallace was recently commissioned to compose a choral work with

Hussein Janmohamed for the Dalai Lama's visit to Vancouver. Lighting design

is by Don White, resident technical director for Nozhem: First Peoples

Performance Space at Trent University, Ontario.

Muriel Miguel is from the Kuna (a people of Panama and Colombia) and

Rappahannock (a people of Eastern Virginia) nations. Forming the play's

backdrop is an immense quilt which evokes the mola, a traditional costume of

Kuna women, rich with ancient symbols representing flowers, sea animals,

birds and demons depicted via reverse appliqué. The play, says Miguel, is

virtually a mola come to life. It opens with sounds of an honoring/war song for

the dead interwoven with a female voice calling for her mother as Indian

massacre site names are projected onto the quilt. The play embodies the

tradition of the passing on of memories. That it is directed by her daughter,

Murielle Borst, says Miguel, is another embodiment of this process.

Miguel trained in modern dance with Alwin Nikolais and Erick Hawkins. WithJoseph Chaikin's Open Theatre, she appeared in the groundbreaking plays

"Terminal," "The Serpent," "Mere Ubu," and "Viet Rock." With Spiderwoman

Theater, she has performed at the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn

Academy of Music, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Walker Art Center,

Theater for the New City, Dance Theatre Workshop and WOW Cafe Theatre,

among countless other venues. She has also actively mentored young

Indigenous performers, mostly women, at New York University, The Centre for

Indigenous Theatre in Toronto, and independently. She has pioneered the

teaching of Indigenous Performance through "storyweaving" and through the

use of the Laban method. She has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in

Fine Arts from Miami University, Ohio, and was profiled in American Women

Directors of the Twentieth Century, published in 2008. She was chosen as the

first Lipinsky resident (Feminist-in-Residence) at San Diego State University's

Women's Studies Department. Along with her sisters, Gloria Miguel and Lisa

Mayo, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2010 from the

prestigious Women's Caucus for Art.

Miguel began to develop "Red Mother" in 2003, working with members of the

Playwrights Workshop Montreal. She continued to develop it at the American

Indian Community House and at urban ink productions/fathom lab's New

Works division. In November, 2007, "Red Mother" was presented in workshop

by Indigenous Performance Initiatives and Two Spirit Productions at Nozhem:

First Peoples Performance Space at Trent University in Ontario. It was then

staged in 2008 by the Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. as

part of their Native Expressions Series. Featuring greatly expanded set,

projection, music, and lighting design, this will be its world premiere.

Spiderwoman Theater was founded in 1976, when Muriel Miguel gathered

together a diverse company of women of varying ages, races, sexual

orientation, and world view. This group included her two sisters (Gloria Miguel

and Lisa Mayo). During the 1980s, the three sisters grew to form the core of

the collective, which became a favorite of the downtown New York theatre

scene. The group broke new ground in their use of storytelling and

"storyweaving" as the basis for the creation of their theatrical pieces.

Spiderwoman has appeared in Indigenous and contemporary theatre and art

venues throughout the Americas and Europe and was honored with a 2005

retrospective exhibit at Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the

American Indian in New York City. The troupe has been featured at the Next

Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Edinburgh Fringe

Festival, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, Theater for the New City and

Dance Theater Workshop, among many locales.

Director/choreographer Murielle Borst is also a professional actress andwriter. She earned her BFA in Theatre and Dance from Long Island University.

She studied acting at HB Studio and with Spiderwoman Theater in New York

City. She has worked with I Giullari di Piazza, a traditional Italian performance

group that works in Neapolitan and Sicilian stories and music, where she has

interpreted traditional Italian myths into English, as well as created original

myths using traditional methods of Native Storytelling. In 2000, her one woman

show, "More Than Feathers and Beads," was presented at the Global

Indigenous Theater Festival, sponsored by the 2000 Summer Olympic Games

and produced at the Sydney Opera House. She is currently Artistic Director of

The Silvercloud Singers and Dancers. She won a Native Heart Award at the

Native American Music awards for her spoken verse on their current CD

"Visions from the City."

"Red Mother" has been developed with the assistance of Loose Change

Productions, founded in 2009, which is dedicated to the promotion of

transnational, cross-cultural theatre and performance exploring new creative,

moral, ethical, and political territories. Loose Change develops works within the

company itself and also co-produces in collaboration with outside artists. The

company's interest is in work that builds innovative structures; they seek stories

told theatrically which entertain but still retain the ability to spur social

awareness and empathy between cultures.

Indigenous Culture and Contemporary Performance

On Sunday, May 30th, a roundtable discussion on “Indigenous

Culture and Contemporary Performance” will immediately

follow the 2:30 performance of Spiderwoman Theater’s “Red

Mother.” Louis Mofsie, Director of the Thunderbird American

Indian Dancers will moderate. Participants include Diane

of Spiderwoman Theater. These artists from the New York City

Indigenous Theatre Community will discuss the challenges of

maintaining visibility and asserting self-determination in the

creation and representation of their work and their culture within

the larger performing arts community.

**************************************

Red Mother is a one-woman show written and performed by the

acclaimed Muriel Miguel, co-founder of Spiderwoman Theater.

It is the story of Belle who, with her horse and companion, Blue

Fred, travels across what was once Indigenous land. Based on

Brecht’s Mother Courage, it weaves traditional dance with

humor and satire, Brechtian themes with Kuna demon and ghost

stories, exploring legacy and memory through the eyes of an old

Indigenous woman.

Using multimedia projections, music, and a staging that utilizes

elaborate fabric hangings, the 60-minute piece is full of earthy

humor, yet stinging pathos. Red Mother explodes the fiction of

Indigenous women as virtuous, noble, “earth mothers,” a

stereotype that has been perpetuated both by the dominant

culture and the Native population for centuries. Belle, the Red

Mother, is a fiery incarnation of Native women who sabotage

that patronizing image. She speaks for and to the failed mothers,

the prostitutes, and the addicts: women living on the fringe

whose very existence contradict the myth of the Native “earth

mother.”

The piece draws on the “storyweaving” techniques of the

legendary Spiderwoman Theater, a radical feminist collective of

Native and non-Native American female performers whose work

has bridged the traditional cultural art forms of storytelling,

dance, and music and the practice of contemporary Western

theater since the 1970s. (“Storyweaving” blends poetry, personal

memory, and Native legend.)

Muriel Miguel worked with the Open Theatre and Joseph

examine the causes and effects of a variety of issues.

Red Mother has been developed with the assistance of Loose

Change Productions.

Loose Change Productions, founded in 2009, is dedicated to the

promotion of transnational, cross-cultural theatre and

performance exploring new creative, moral, ethical, and political

territories. Loose Change develops works within the company

itself and also co-produces in collaboration with outside artists.

Simple yet powerful, authentic and moving: theses words describe Russell’s wonderful

celebration chant. The lyrics in this song are not words in any language but they are

based on aboriginal vocables from the western part of North America.

"This song is about a community coming together to prepare a feast - to celebrate "the gift" of traditions and

the transmission of knowledge. A traditional song will have a certain name or title but it is the context in

which it is sung that denotes the true meaning.

The lyrics in this song are not words in any language but they are based on Aboriginal vocables from the

western part of North America. I am a member of the Lil'wat Nation and have sung and composed many

songs based on this traditional form." RW

WRITTEN IN STONE - Russell Wallace

From 1992 for a Green Thumb Theatre production. I remember I had to

write a song and have it recorded and ready to go in 2 hours since my

to drag my computer around all day on the bus trying to find a place to fix

it.
